PTG Co-President’s Message and News
Those who attended Math Night last Friday night are a little more savvy about shopping, food, and nutrition and how math is involved in it all! Thank you to all who volunteered and especially the PTG’s Math Night Co-Chairs Marc Ubaldino, Erica Wright, and Jeff Furman.
Another thank you must go out to all of those who have supported efforts such as the PTG’s Children’s Programming by already donating to the Annual Appeal! Thanks to your donations, the PTG can fund 100% of the amazing museums, author/illustrators, scientists, and speakers that Children’s Programming brings to Thoreau School every year. You can check out the full list of programs here, including the two exciting events scheduled for the 3rd Graders and Kindergartners the week after break! We hope you agree that it is money well-spent, so please consider donating today!

PTG Executive Committee Interest: Are you interested in serving on the Executive Committee of the PTG or learning what each role entails? Let us know! 2018-2019 PTG Executive Officer positions include Co-President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Officers will be voted in at the last PTG meeting of the school year. PTG By-Law Revisions: The PTG By-Laws must be reviewed at least once every three years. The PTG Board has reviewed the By-Laws last revised in 2015 and a copy of the proposed 2018 revision can be found on the PTG website here. A vote to ratify the 2018 revised By-Laws will be held at the next PTG meeting on Friday, May 18th.
ANNUAL APPEAL: Annual Appeal needs your help!
We can feel it – spring is in the air (although now that we type that, it probably means there will be a snowstorm). Usually, in springtime, people get a pep in their step and perhaps start to feel a little generous! Okay, we might have made that up but hopefully it got your attention. Thoreau needs your help! We haven’t seen great participation this year towards the Thoreau Annual Appeal and we need that to change. Please take a minute to donate – your money is well spent. All those programs your child loves – many of those are funded by the PTG. Please help!

LOST AND FOUND TO BE DONATED TOMORROW (FRIDAY APRIL 13TH): Hey, whose Ohio State Buckeyes shirt is this? How about these adult-size duck boots with the furry top insert? The contents of the Thoreau School lost and found will be donated to charity at the end of the day tomorrow (Friday April 13), so please come and claim your stuff! There are no fewer than twenty warm winter hats there, plus about twenty sweatshirts/sweaters/shirts, several scarves, snow boots, sneakers, headbands, lunch boxes, water bottles, a bunch of toys and countless gloves. The “virtual lost and found” photo gallery has been updated to show all items including new ones added since last week and up to yesterday afternoon – click here to view the gallery. Most of us assume we are not missing anything, but are you sure? Click now to check it out – it costs you nothing to click, and losing that Abercrombie/Nike/Gap sweatshirt costs way more. The school opens shortly after 6am weekday mornings and is typically open past 5pm if you want to swing by before or after work to collect your items. THOREAU AT THE RED SOX: – only a few tickets left – act fast!
Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves – Friday, May 25, 2018 – 7:10pm – Bleacher Seats, Section 38
Once again Thoreau Elementary has been given the opportunity to purchase Red Sox tickets in a group block! Given the popularity of games in the past we have secured 250 tickets at a cost of $25 each. A great opportunity to take a family of 4 to a game for $100!! Tickets will be given out on a first come/first serve basis with mandatory adherence to the guidelines below.
Ticket requests must be emailed to JENIFERLPERRY@GMAIL.COM. Please note: no other modes of requesting tickets will be honored. You will receive an email response letting you know if tickets have been secured for you within 24 hours. Your email must include the following (requests not containing the required information will not receive tickets):
– Your name
– Students name
– Number of tickets requested
Tickets must be picked up at 40 INGHAM LANE in Concord on either Thursday, March 29 or Friday, March 30 between 6:00PM and 7:30PM, no exceptions. At that time, a check made out to ‘Thoreau PTG’ will be required to pick up tickets. NO TICKETS WILL BE MAILED. Any tickets not picked up by Friday, 3/30 at 7:30 will be given to remaining families on the waitlist.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION: The scorecard is up! The Box Tops for Education classroom contest has been quietly underway and we are now rounding the final turn before the finish line. The kids will be watching the whole year’s action unfold on a scorecard posted above the collection box in the school lobby between now and the end of May. It’s time to start gathering up those box tops that have been lying around the kitchen and turning them in. Please put your clips in a small plastic bag and include in the bag a slip of paper with your child’s name and their teacher’s name. If you just have one or two you don’t need a bag – you can just write the names on the back of each box top. You don’t need to count them or check the expiration dates – we’ll do that part. Even expired clips get credit in the classroom contest, so turn them all in! Which will be the top-clipping classroom this year? Stay tuned!
MUSKETAQUID EARTH DAY: Saturday, April 28 10:30-2:00pm: Thoreau group will gather at 10:15, look for the Thoreau School banner.
Please join Thoreauly Green and the Thoreau students who participated in this year’s Musketaquid Workshops to represent the Thoreau School in the Musketaquid Earth Day Parade and Festival on Saturday, April 28. The parade begins at 10:30 at the Umbrella Arts Center and ends at the Old Manse. The River Ceremony will be at the North Bridge immediately following the parade. IT’S RACE TIME: Don’t miss out!! Thoreau’s 12th Annual Road Race is Sunday, May 20th. Pre-register by April 30th and guarantee yourself the limited edition RACE SHIRT!!! All events take place at and around the school. The 5K run starts at 10am and Kids’ Runs (.5 and 1 mile) begin at 11:30am. 5th GRADE ART RETROSPECTIVE: CALL FOR ART
It is that time of year again, time for the 5th Grade Art Retrospective. This year we will be celebrating the students’ artwork on Monday, June 4th in conjunction with the 5th grade concert. The exhibit will be up for approximately 2 weeks beginning the week of May 21st. Artwork will be taken home at the end of the night. Every 5th grade student is required to participate in this event. It is an opportunity for students to reflect on their artwork and recognize how they have grown from preschool to 5th grade. They will be reviewing their work in class as part of the preparation process and will be writing a reflective piece about their individual collections.
Please help your child begin the process at home by going through any artwork that has been saved over the years. When selecting work, look for art that displays personal style at different ages: choice of color preferences, expressive line indicating comfort of media, or similarities in subject matter over the years. Let this be a stress-free, supportive, nonjudgmental time since there is no right or wrong in art, only individual personal expression. All 5th grade artwork has been kept at school for those who do not have work from previous years.
Since we will be working on the written piece and mounting the work during class, I need all the work in the week after April Vacation. Feel free to bring it in earlier if selections are already made. Each student should bring in up to 6 pieces of artwork, if possible 1 from each grade k-4. We will be limited to a 24” x 36” paper so some editing may occur during class time. Work from other schools is acceptable and welcome, as well as work completed out of school. If your selection of artwork is limited, work demonstrating only this year’s artistic growth is also an acceptable option. Again, the 5th grade work has been kept in the art room throughout the year.
Also a few reminders; please label all of your work with pencil on the back or underside of the project. Please no framed artwork as the bulletin boards will not support them and limit 3d work to one per child. (Photographs of 3D work are great and limit the chance of breakage!) If something is super special please remember that I cannot guarantee its safety. Thank you so much for your support and time. I hope this ca n be a positive and exciting experience for everyone.

ANNUAL CCHS LACROSSE SPRING CLEAN-UP: Sunday, April 29, 2018. CCHS Lacrosse players will rake, haul, spread mulch and perform light yard work for residents of Concord and Carlisle. Only $20 per player, per hour and all proceeds go to the CCHS Lacrosse program. Work crews run from 9 am – 1 pm, with a minimum of 2 players. This is our only fundraiser and it sells out, so reserve your crew today!

IVY CHILD: Hosts a Mindful Morning Series this Spring, at the Concord Free Public Library. The series will offer free, weekly yoga and mindfulness classes on Saturday mornings from 10am-11amon the Concord Public library lawn on the following dates: April 28, May 5, May 12, and May 19, 2018. Classes are FREE and open to the public for participants of all ages and abilities (children, adults, senior citizens welcome). No pre-registration or experience is required to participate. Please bring your own yoga mats/blankets.

MIDDLESEX SCHOOL SUMMER ARTS: Registration is now open for Middlesex School Summer Arts (“MSSA”). MSSA is a multi-arts day program for campers entering grades 1-11. Campers (grades 4 and up) are able to choose their schedule based upon their interests. We offer classes in visual arts (painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, print making), dance (modern, jazz, hip hop, Broadway dance), media (photography, playwriting, creative writing, yearbook, stop motion, video production), music (jazz/rock band, piano, guitar, drumming), technical theatre (costume design, sound/lighting, props, stage management), theatre (a capella, comedy club, fractured fairytales) and recreation (swimming, games) to name a few. Additionally, we offer many full-length performance opportunities for interested campers.
This year the 4-5th grade five week show is A Year with Frog and Toad. The musical for the 6-8th grade 5-week campers is James and the Giant Peach. The non-musical for the 9-11th grade 5 -week campers is Peter and the Starcatchers. The musical for 3-week campers, grades 4-11, is Willie Wonka, Jr. and the musical for 5 week high school campers is The Addams Family.
