Happy October everyone! We hope you all are excited for the Thoreau Book Fair. Bring in your used books and coins, sign up to volunteer and join us at Family Night this Friday, October 12th. The next PTG Meeting is a night meeting, Wednesday, October 17th at 7:00 pm. If you cannot make the day meetings but would like to get involved please join us. Finally, get your tickets now for the Thoreau Adult Social, Saturday, November 3rd at the Concord Art Museum before it sells out!! This fun event raises lots of money for the Thoreau School.

The Book Fair is Here!
We’re accepting used book donations now (NO board books or adult books, please), and are getting set up for Family Night on Friday, October 12. The Book Fair is a fun-filled Thoreau tradition, and we need your help to make it happen! For more information, go to http://www.thoreauptg.org/book-fair/.

Thoreau Coin Challenge
We’re getting the kids even more excited for the book fair with a little friendly competition. From October 9-19 they bring in coins to drop into their grade’s donation bottle and each class in the winning grade gets an extra classroom book! All money raised will go toward purchasing even more books for our classroom teachers.
Countdown to the Adult Social
Time to book the babysitter! The Thoreau Adult Social & Auction is a month away! We can sense your anticipation of this rockin’ event, as so many of you have already bought tickets! Join us on November 3rd for only $35/per person, you can enjoy delicious food and open bar in a beautiful venue. Our Fundraising Team is hard at work securing some new fun and exciting auction items. Yankee Candle Fundraiser
In the coming days your child should bring home the packet for our annual Yankee Candle Fundraiser. This fundraiser is an excellent source of income for the school as we get to keep 40% of all sales. Please take a moment to review the packet and return all orders to your teacher by Friday, 10/26 (orders are guaranteed for Thanksgiving). Money should be submitted with the order form and all checks made payable to ‘Thoreau PTG’. You can also follow the easy steps located within the packet to order on-line. Save the date! On Wednesday November 21st, Thoreau School will host its annual Turkey Trot. This event is a beloved, non-competitive 1 mile fun run, which begins in the gym and ends with the students chasing “Tom the Turkey” through the Thoreau neighborhood. All parents, family, friends, and neighbors are encouraged to line the course and cheer on our students. Bring your cow bells and noise makers!
*all volunteers must have a current CORI on file with the front office
Volunteer at the School Garden During Recess!
Parent volunteers are needed to supervise children in Thoreau School’s outdoor classroom/ garden Wednesdays and Fridays during lunch recess (weather permitting) from 11:50 – 1:30 (or a chosen segment during that time) in the fall from mid-September to the end of November and in the spring from first Friday after April break until school’s end in June. Volunteers may lead an organized activity such as sketching, mapping the garden, writing poetry, or just supervise the children and let them explore and enjoy! Sign Up for Mother Earth Mondays
Mother Earth Monday volunteers guide students on how to properly incorporate composting into to their normal recycling and trash disposal routine. Since this is a pilot program, composting currently only happens at Monday lunches, with hopes of expanding to daily lunches in the future. Please help if you can by signing up here!

A Toast to CYT
Concord Youth Theatre (CYT) is pleased to announce an upcoming fundraising event. Please join us on Saturday evening October 20 for “A Toast to CYT,” an exclusive wine and beer tasting event to support CYT’s programs! Starting at 7PM in Union Hall at 27 School Street in Carlisle center, tastings of fine wine and craft beer from around the globe will be available, provided by West Concord Wine & Spirits. The new Concord-Carlisle Chess Society welcomes students from Concord, Carlisle and beyond to join them for their first chess tournament of the year this Sunday, October 14th, 11:30am at CCHS. Students new to tournaments will learn to use a chess clock, record their moves, and at the end they will have an nationally recognized US Chess Federation rating! Mark your calendars for October 13 for the CCYS Night at the New England Revolution. Join the CCYS community of families, players and coaches for an evening of fun, food and the finest soccer in town as the New England Revolution battle the Orlando City FC. Free Trial Lesson Week at Concord Conservatory, Oct. 15 -20
Whether you’re a child or an adult, individual instruction is the most effective way to make significant progress in musical skills. Students ages 4 – adult can sign-up for a free trial private lesson on the instrument of their choice. Explore your musical options by signing up for a free trial lesson at the Concord Conservatory of Music (CCM) for the week of October 15th through October 20th. The trial lessons are available for — banjo, bass, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, mandolin, piano, saxophone, trumpet, violin, viola, and voice. Music Lessons with IMSCC – Fall Session is underway, please join us!
IMSCC offers one-on-one music lessons with professional musicians and educators. We have lessons for a wide variety of band and orchestra instruments as well as piano, guitar, ukulele and voice. Lessons take place after school and evenings and are conveniently located at CCHS, Sanborn, and the Carlisle school campus. Tuition for lessons starting mid-semester will be prorated. Read more

CCYH Learn to Play Hockey
The CCYH Learn to Skate and Mosquitos (Learn to Play Hockey) programs are now open for registration. Both programs are held at the Middlesex School in Concord from mid November through the end of February. Learn to Skate sessions are held Saturday mornings and Mosquitos sessions are held Saturday and Sunday mornings. Please visit www.ccyh.org for more information and to register.
