APRIL 25, 2013

Room Parents assist the classroom teacher with scheduling volunteers in the classroom and/or for field trips; help organize classroom events/parties, send out email communications to the class about upcoming school and PTG events, and assist the PTG with certain events or fundraisers.  Assignments will be made on a first come, first served basis, with two parents assigned per class for grades K-4, and 3 parents per class for Grade 5.  We will begin accepting Room Parent applications on May 8, 2013.  Room Parents will receive more details after class lists are distributed in the summer.

If you are interested in applying to be a Room Parent for your child’s class, please email Amy Weber, the Room Parent Coordinator, amysweber@gmail.com, with the following information: Child’s name and  grade, Parent’s name, phone number, and email address.  If you have twins in different classrooms, or children in different grades, please indicate 1st and 2nd choice in order of preference, or let us know if you are willing to serve both classes.

To ensure equal opportunity for everyone, we ask that you please email the above information to amysweber@gmail.com beginning on May 8, 2013 at 8am.  Feel free to email before then if you have any questions.

Thoreau’s 5th Grade Girl Junior Scouts are helping create an Alphabet Garden for the soon-to-be renovated Grounds for Learning. The Girl Scouts are coordinating with the PTG to help raise money for signs, plants and a guide for this special learning garden.

Between now and May 3, online donations to PTG will “buy a letter” for the Alphabet Garden. For a donation of any size, your name will be included in the Alphabet Garden’s list of Letter Supporters. For the first 26 gifts of $15 or more, the Girl Scouts will give you a special thank you gift of a selection of floral post cards and two delicious flower-shaped cookies. These will be delivered to your child’s classroom before Mother’s Day – a lovely Mothers’ Day that will grow in the future!

To make a donation, go to www.thoreauptg.org and select “Donate”. Please include the following information in the special instructions before finalizing the donation:

Only three books remain in the Library’s Honor Books Box.  Come soon to choose a book to honor your child or your child’s teacher  (the three remaining titles are most appropriate for earlier grades). For those of you who are new to Thoreau, the Honor Book program is a way for you to donate an already-purchased book to the Library.  The book will have a bookplate with your honoree’s name. Many wonderful titles have been added to the Library over the years using this method.  Thank you!
