Before and After School Programs Fall 2018

Japanese Crafts and Culture

Come experience Japanese culture, crafts and food in this class led by Ms. Burns. Kids will be introduced to traditional arts such as origami, sumie, and shuji/shodo. They will learn about Japanese Manga and Anime, and will study Miyazaki. Finally, kids will try some Japanese cooking! Who: Grades 3-5, Where: Ms. Burns’ Room, Class limit: 10, Cost: $90
When: Thursdays, 3:30 – 4:30 on 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, and 11/15

Join us for the Thoreau Minecraft club! This club offers the unique experience of playing with others using Minecraft mentors will be available to help students design and construct and students will be encouraged to collaborate in this virtual world while solving differences in constructive ways. Who: grades 2-5, Where: Computer Lab, Cost: $60 (no personal membership is needed),
Mondays (Class Limit: 12), 3:30-4:30 on 9/24, 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, and 11/26
Thursdays (Class Limit: 12), 3:30 – 4:30 on 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, and 11/15
*One session per child – a child may not enroll in both sessions.

Kids Cooking Green

Are you a kid who loves food? Kids Cooking Green is coming to the Thoreau School this fall! Join us for five weeks of fun in the kitchen learning about local ingredients, meeting a local farmer, and creating some delicious snacks! We’ll explore what makes food taste good, learn about nutrition, cook with local products, and prepare & eat fabulous snack at each class. Who: Grades 1-2, Where: 1st floor Teacher’s Lounge, Class Limit: 16 (must have 12 to run), Cost: $180** Any interested family requiring financial assistance for this program should contact Rachel Levesque, School Counselor.
When: Thursdays, 3:30 – 5:00 on 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, and 10/25

Before School Chess

Join us for Chess instruction and play before school at Thoreau this spring. Our instructor, Vadim Martirosov, is a highly experienced Chess Master who leads the Concord-Carlisle Chess Club as well as the before school program at Willard. Who: all grades are welcome! Where: Thoreau School Library, Cost: $85, Class Limit: 16 (must have 16 to run), **Volunteers Required: We must have a parent chaperone at each of the classes. A SignUpGenius will go out to select dates for chaperoning once enrollment is finalized.
When: Mondays, 8:00-8:50 am on 9/24, 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, and 12/10

Fuzzy Felt

Join Mrs. Dillon in her sewing extravaganza! Learn how to sew bags, pillows, stuffed animals and learn appliqué. Fun for boys and girls who like crafts. Who: Grades 3-5, Where: Mrs. Dillon’s Room, Class limit: 10, Cost: $80
When: Wednesdays, 3:30 – 4:30 on 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 11/7, 11/14, and 11/28
