The Thoreau Book Room is an important resource for classroom teachers and tutors. It houses sets of books, shelved by reading level, that are available to be checked out by teachers and tutors for use in guided reading and other literacy activities.
When the books are returned to the book room, they need to be shelved where they belong so they’re ready to be used again. That’s where we come in. We record which books were checked out and reshelve them. All you need to contribute is a love of books and some time.
This is also a great opportunity for those who want to volunteer, but want some flexibility in terms of scheduling. There are no fixed hours, just come in whenever the building is open and you have time to spare. Sometimes volunteers come in after dropping off or picking up their student. You can close the door if you want some quiet time, or leave it open and watch the kids go by and the school day unfold. You might even get a glimpse of your own child.
