PTG Co-Presidents’ Message & News

So many of you have already explored the PTG website (www.thoreauptg.org) and signed up for a variety of volunteer opportunities before we’ve even had a chance to advertise!!! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm!!! Please note that ALL volunteers for the school and/or PTG must visit Donna Macone in the school front office to fill out a CORI form in order to volunteer. The form is available on the PTG website at https://www.thoreauptg.org/wp-content/uploads/CORIform.pdf. You must also provide Donna with a copy of your license or other approved ID to be processed. Many additional volunteer opportunities are described below. Please check them out and help where you can!!

We hope you can join us tomorrow morning at 9am in the Cafeteria for the PTG Welcome Coffee & First meeting of the year! We promise more socialization than meeting. All are welcome, including young children. If you are unable to attend, ie. your boss isn’t too keen on you slipping away at 9am on a Friday, please know that you are still part of the PTG and can reach out to us at any time with questions, ideas, or whatever! Minutes of the meetings can be found on the website under “About Us/Meetings and Minutes”. We’ll try to get them uploaded in a timely matter after each meeting. Also, please note that our October, January, and April meetings will be held at 7pm in the library.

Minecraft Club Volunteers Needed

Does your 2nd thru 5th grader love Minecraft? If you answered yes, you are in luck! We are looking for 1-2 parent volunteers to lead our popular after school Minecraft Club on Monday and/or Thursday afternoons this fall. Benefits include pre-registration for your child/children, and a waiver of the $60 class fee. (The club activities are led by two great high school volunteers, so the parent job is mostly administrative.) To learn more, or to volunteer please email Abby Jenney at abigailjenney@gmail.com

Fall BOKS starts Tuesday, September 25th – Registration opens September 10th

We are pleased to announce the fall session of BOKS, a before school physical activity program, at the Thoreau School. BOKS is a nationally-recognized, before-school fitness program. Studies show that engaging in physical activity before school boosts kids’ ability to learn and retain information. After the first session at Thoreau, Thoreau teachers reported a positive difference in kids enrolled in the program! BOKS prepares children for a day of learning and is an important step in helping children gain an appreciation of the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. BOKS was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book “Spark”. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled with team-oriented games and provide plenty of opportunity for play, since the program focuses on fun! For more information on the program, please visit www.bokskids.org.

The Fall BOKS season will run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:50 AM, starting on September 25th and running through November 15th. Because of the immense interest in this program, the first 25 students will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Registration will open on Monday, September 10th at 8AM and close on Friday September 14th at 5PM – register early, and you must re-register even if your child participated in a past BOKS session. Click here to learn more and to register: https://www.thoreauptg.org/boks-fitness-program/

All parents are expected to volunteer during at least one meeting though they’re welcome to sign up for more! Go to https://www.thoreauptg.org/lego-club/ for more details and to sign up, or contact Jordan Binder with any questions.
