February 14, 2013

A huge thank you to Chris Economos and Suzy Symons for pulling off another fun Bingo Night! This annual tradition is always a favorite. Thanks also to Mr. Hourihan and Ms. Keefe for their expert calling skills (we think the kids really come to see you!)

The Thoreau School PTG will be hosting a “Meet and Greet” for all School Committee Candidates in the cafeteria on Wednesday, March 6, 9:30-10:30am. Candidates will have the opportunity to meet Thoreau parents, and will then be given the opportunity to speak for a few minutes and offer some insight into their platforms. To conclude, each candidate will answer a set of 3-5 questions (depending on the time) which we will collect from the Thoreau parent community. If you are interested in submitting a question for the forum, please send it to either Shelagh (shelaghmoskow@aol.com) or Jen (larison@verizon.net) by Wednesday, February 27 at 5:00pm. The PTG board will look over the questions (screen for duplicates) and choose the ones that best represent our entire school community. There are four candidates running, and this will be a good opportunity for each of them to speak to the issues that affect the elementary schools and the greater district. We look forward to hosting this event, and hope you will be able to attend.

Are you interested in helping out with Thursday’s Thoreau Announcements? We are looking for someone to join the team! This is a good way to help out the PTG right from home. If you are interested, please notify Shelagh (shelaghmoskow@aol.com), Jen (larison@verizon.net), or Jackie (jackiemeehan@comcast.net) as soon as possible. Thanks! Job description includes the following:

  • Overview: Thoreau Announcements is a weekly publication produced by the PTG. It provides communication about important dates, activities, fundraisers, and general information of interest to the Thoreau community. Submissions to the Thoreau Announcements are made via email. The deadline for submissions is Monday, 9pm prior to the Thursday publication date. The TA is not published during school vacation weeks.
  • Responsibilities: There are two Editors of Thoreau Announcements. The Editors compile the submissions weekly, edit them, and post the final copy on the Thoreau PTG website. (Posting triggers emailing to subscribers.) The TA can be put together anytime after Monday at 9 pm, but enough time must be built in to accommodate any changes that may be necessary before it is posted/delivered mid-day Thursday.
  • Time Commitment: Typically an Editor works for one month and then switches off to the other Editor, passing on any special instructions, notes, etc. The time commitment when “on” is 2-3 hours per week.

Friday, March 1, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Join us for an adventure to snowy Antarctica to explore the depths of the oceans and travel across icy glaciers, playing math games and solving riddles along the way! We’ll have a raffle, estimation challenges and prizes, as well as pizza, snacks and drinks for sale. Bring the whole family to the Thoreau cafeteria for this annual tradition of fun and games for all ages. For more information, contact me at cathy.chadwick@gmail.com

MATH NIGHT VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for volunteers to help (for an hour shift) with the math games and concession. If you are interested, please contact: skelliher@sonusnet.com or cathy.chadwick@gmail.com.

Thrive, the Healthy Concord planning project will be sponsoring two upcoming discussions about what it is like to raise a family in Concord. These discussions are aimed at parents with young children (pre-school and Elementary). For more information, see the flyer at the PTG site, https://www.thoreauptg.org/documents/Family_Flyer_V3.pdf

Third Grade Families: Recently a letter was sent home requesting a physical exam for 4th grade. The letter referred to a physical exam form which I failed to include in the mailing. Most of the doctors submit their own routine form and that will be fine. If you need a form, please contact me at the Health Office and I will gladly send out a form to you individually. Sorry for the confusion.

If Lewis & Clark had started their expedition to the Pacific Coast on the same day the Geography Quest started, they’d have just passed the small village of La Charette on the Missouri River. If you took this journey using modern transportation, you would have covered the same distance in just over 2 hours! February Vacation Week is a great time to travel along with Lewis & Clark! Completed Quests can be returned to the Thoreau library any time before March 4. Additional copies can be downloaded from the PTG website. (The answer to last week’s trivia is: Both! Jefferson appointed Meriweather Lewis governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory in 1806. Clark became governor of the Missouri territory in 1813.) Check next week’s Thoreau Announcements for the answer to this week’s GeoQuest Trivia.
