ROAD RACE THANKS

We hope everyone had a wonderful time at the Road Race on Sunday! The weather cooperated and everything went off without a hitch. Many thanks to Betsy Dorr and Karen Monks, Road Race Chairs, and their team of coordinators and helpers. We appreciate all of the hard work that went into planning and running this large fundraising event. We hope everyone has a nice long Memorial Day weekend.  -Jen and Shelagh

UPCOMING SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

Our next all school assembly will be on Friday, May 24.  Students can wear Thoreau colors or Thoreau shirts on this day to school their school spirit.

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION

Guess what, you guys?  We got our spring Box Tops check from General Mills recently.  Thanks to all of your diligent clipping plus our lucky sweepstakes win in February, we received a tidy sum of $765.40.  That’s a lotta Box Tops – great job everyone!

A special “thank you” goes to our February and March superstars.  The Warren/Stokes family in Mrs. Erickson’s classroom brought in 169 coupons and the Travias family of Mrs. Peirce’s class rings the bell once again with another 446 box tops!  You rock.

One final reminder:  tomorrow (Friday, May 24) is the last day to get your clips into the collection box for the classroom contest.  The lobby scorecard was updated again this week and the new standings are:  kindergarten = Shaw, 1st grade = Thompson, 2nd grade = Peirce, 3rd grade = Ham, 4th grade = Lemaire pulls ahead (but with Murphy close behind), 5th grade = Erickson. THOREAU FACULTY & STAFF LUNCHEON DONATIONS STILL NEEDED!

CALL FOR RECIPES!

What’s the secret to creating simple, delicious meals in under 30 minutes that kids love?  The Thoreau Family Cookbook, chock-full of your family’s favorite recipes!  Families may submit up to 3 recipes with one to two lines about why your family loves it, along with student drawings which will be featured in the cookbook.  The Thoreau Family Cookbook is destined to become your go-to source for the greatest hits in the kitchen. From soup to nuts, categories include appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, vegetables, side dishes, main dishes, potluck favorites, crock pot favorites, teacher recipes, breads & rolls, desserts, cookies, candy and miscellaneous.  Please submit your recipes and drawings to thoreaucooks@gmail.com by Friday, June 21.  If you prefer hard copy, please send your family recipes to your child’s teacher. Cookbook will be available this coming Fall just in time for the holidays.  Happy cooking!

ANNUAL APPEAL UPDATE

Dear Thoreau Students and Families, it is with great sadness that I have decided to resign from teaching at Thoreau. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching so many fantastic students and working with so many wonderful parents for seventeen years. Thank you so much for all that you have given to me. Milldam Nursery School’s 8th Annual Ducky Race & Fair  

Milldam’s annual Ducky Race & Fair is just around the corner.  It is a great event (rain or shine!) for the kids, and the parents/adults can stand to walk away with some great raffle prizes!   There will be carnival games, baby animal petting zoo, face painting, amazing silent auction, snacks and, of course, the Lucky Duck Raffle with an $800 grand prize sponsored by Fritz and Gigi’s.  Join in the fun on Saturday, June 1 from 11-1pm at Emerson Playground. Walk-in Registration Day at Concord Conservatory of Music  

For one day only, on Wednesday, June 5 from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, The Concord Conservatory of Music will be offering one day of Walk-In Registration.  Students who register on this day will receive a 10% discount on their group class tuition.  CCM is the area’s non-profit community music school which offers developmentally appropriate Early Childhood Group music experiences: singing, listening, and musical movement, drumming, and eventually reading and notating music. Children, ages 12 mos. to 6 years, will discover all of the qualities of music through movement.  Body movement is used to explore phrase, pitch, accent, and all of the richness of music using simple instruments.  Musical concepts are presented in a visual manner, using a variety of aids to create a mental image of music in the child’s brain.  It’s a fun way to learn and experience the joys of music and a great start to future instrument, or voice study.  New for Fall 2013 – our Meet the Instruments and class!

CCM also offers group voice classes for the young singer ages 6-8 and 9-11, as well as group keyboard instruction. After June 5, registrations are accepted online in the office and by mail.  Private lesson registration is ongoing throughout the year.

6th Annual PMC Kids Ride Concord

The PMC Concord Kids Ride will take place on Sunday, June 9 from 8:30-12:00 at Middlesex School in Concord. This is the 6th year of the ride and we hope to break a record with at least 500 kids ridingKids from ages 5-15 from Concord, Carlisle, Sudbury, and Lincoln are encouraged to sign up to ride for 1, 5, 10 or 15 miles.  Ride to raise money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  Kids under the age of 5 can take part in the Kids Junior Ride as well so bring the whole family. The morning includes lots of festivities, food and of course the ride.  For more information, to register to ride or volunteer online go to http://www.kids.pmc.org/concord.
