Dear Thoreau Families,

I think that it is safe to say that Spring is finally here!  The weeks following April vacation are often the busiest of the year.  This week we complete our MCAS Math testing and that will be following by 5th grade MCAS Science and PARCC Math for two of our classes.  I talked with the several 5th graders about the math test the other day and they reported that it was “easy”.  Our students are very well prepared for these assessments, thanks to a dedicated staff and supportive parents.

Speaking of staff, this week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  Teacher Appreciation Week is a week-long celebration in the United States observed the first full week in May.  If you have the opportunity, extend a special e-mail or note of appreciation to the staff at Thoreau who work with your children.  They are a very special crew!

We are delighted that the FY15 Budgets for CPS and CCHS were passed at a recent Town Meeting.  However, the CPS Supplemental Appropriation request for $200,000 did not pass.  Due to this, there is a need to reduce expenditures in discretionary accounts for the remainder of the school year, professional development & conferences, substitutes for tutors and assistants, overtime for custodians and field trips.  To avoid canceling field trips, all three elementary schools will need to charge fees for field trips between now and the remainder of the year.  If your child has an upcoming field trip, you will receive a notice from your teacher detailing the amount needed (range $3-$16 per student).  If this presents a burden to any family, please notify me, as we will ensure that all children are able to participate.

Placement information was sent to all Thoreau families last week.  Just a gentle reminder that if you wish to use the form to share information, it should be returned to your classroom teacher this Friday.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the annual Thoreau Road Race/BBQ this month on the 18th.  Mark your calendars!

Happy Spring!
