MESSAGE FROM CO-PRESIDENTS

Thanks to everyone for coming to Back to School Night last night.  It was wonderful to see so many parents enjoying their classroom visits, meeting our specialists and staff, and getting to know other parents.  Thank you to Principal Charles, the teachers and staff for a great evening!

Upcoming events:

  • Tomorrow is the Annual Halloween Costume Sale Event with Crafts and Dinner.
  • October 7th – PTG meeting at 9am in Cafeteria.   All are welcome!
  • October 13th – School Picture Day
  • October 16th – Family Book Fair night

Volunteer(s) Needed:

We are hoping to get a few parent volunteers this year to be School Committee Observers.  This role would entail attending school committee meetings throughout the year and then updating the community through the PTG.  If we get several volunteers, we can rotate meetings that you would attend.  If you are interested in this very important role, please contact Trish Siefer at thesiefers@gmail.com or Betsy Martel at betsymartel@yahoo.com.  Thank you!

Trish and Betsy

PARENT OPENING FOR SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

There is one parent opening on the Thoreau School Advisory Council (SAC).

The Thoreau SAC is responsible for the stewardship of the school community.  This council is comprised of both parents and teachers in addition to the school principal.  Parents on the Council serve for two years.  The main responsibilities of the SAC are to ensure the successful completion of the School Improvement Plan and to serve as an advisory board to the school principal.  The SAC is another way for parents in the school community to have a voice with representatives of the school district—namely the school principal.  Meetings are once per month, on a date and time to be determined by Principal Angel Charles and the SAC committee members.

All interested parents should submit a 200 word statement to the two PTG Co-Presidents, Trish Siefer and Betsy Martel (thesiefers@gmail.com and betsymartel@yahoo.com), which will be shared with the school community.  All statements should be received by end of day Monday, October 5.  The PTG will hold an election at the PTG meeting on October 7 in accordance with the policy of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in which the entire Thoreau parent community can vote.

COSTUMES, CRAFTS AND DINNER TOMORROW, 5:30-7:30PM

Please join us tomorrow, Friday, October 2, from 5:30-7:30 PM for costume shopping, crafts and a pizza dinner at the Annual Halloween Costume Sale Event. We have great costumes in all sizes! Thank you Thoreau families for donating some absolutely adorable and scary costumes. It will be a fun event for all. The local Assabet Valley Boys and Girls Club will be receiving the unsold toddler/small child costumes for their pre-school program. We will be holding a sneak peak sale Friday morning from 8-9AM. Cash and checks will be accepted and all proceeds will go to the Thoreau PTG.

BUBBLEMANIA

Bubblemania is visiting the Thoreau Kindergarteners on Friday, October 2!  This extremely popular program combines high energy with unique artistry.  It is loaded with wit, comedy, and tons of science. Students will learn how bubbles form, why they are spherical, and the physical laws of the natural world while being delighted by amazing soap bubble manipulations – from intricate bubble art to seeing a classmate put inside a bubble! This program is brought to you by the PTG thanks to generous contributions from the Thoreau School community!

BOKS Begins October 6!

It’s on! We are pleased to report that we are taking ALL 60 students who registered by the deadline for our Pilot BOKS Program (as opposed to running a lottery and taking 40). The program will begin promptly at 8am on Tuesday morning, October 6. Please check your email for important information. If you registered by Friday deadline and did not receive an email from us, please contact Adrienne at adrienne.principe@gmail.com. If you missed the registration deadline or are unavailable for this session, our goal is to run two sessions in the spring to accommodate even more BOKS Kids, so stay tuned! BOKS ROCKS!

THOREAU SCHOOL ADULT SOCIAL – SAVE THE DATE!

In case you haven’t noticed, we did not have one single full week of school for the entire month of September. (Cue the wine). To that end, please save the date for the annual Thoreau School Adult Social on Saturday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Concord Art Association. (Cue the babysitter). For you new families to Thoreau, this event sold out last year, so be on the lookout for additional emails that allow you to purchase tickets online. This event truly is a lovely way to meet people at Thoreau, and to catch up with old friends. We all work so hard throughout the year, don’t you think we all deserve at least one night out together? Mark your calendars now!
