BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION

Big thanks go to a few Box Tops superstars in the month of November. The Warren/Stokes family in Mrs. Erickson’s classroom contributed 260 coupons last month and the Travias family in Mrs. Peirce’s classroom turned in a whopping 411! There are also one or two families in Ms. Ham’s classroom who between them are dropping a bag in the collection box just about every week. Great job, you guys! Kudos also to the many others who continue to scan their recycle bins for that familiar logo each week. You folks brought our coupon count for November up to 1,114 box tops. Nice work!

For those of you who would like to participate but don’t think you have many Box Tops in your home, you would be surprised to learn how many of the products you already use are part of the Box Tops for Education program. Breakfast Food Drive to Benefit the Pine Street Inn
Girl Scout Troop 72687 is running a food drive to benefit the Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter in Boston.  Every day this organization serves over 3,000 meals to those who are in need.  Please join our troop in this important community service project.

  • Who: Girl Scout Troop 72687, the Fourth Grade and you!
  • What We Need: boxes of cereal, hot cocoa mix, and ground coffee
  • When: Monday, November 26- Friday, December 7 
  • Where: Look for collection bins in the school entry and the fourth grade hallway

Concord Youth Theatre Junior Company Production
Concord Youth Theatre is proud to present our newly formed CYT Junior Company, with children in grades 2-4. Their first production is “How to Eat Like a Child.” Based on the book by Delia Ephron, this musical romp through the joys and sorrows of being a child is hilarious. The actors give 23 lessons in such subjects as how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room and how to laugh hysterically. Charming, witty and fun for the whole family. This is under the direction of JulieAnn Govang, music direction of Jane Raithel and choreography of Julia Nelson.

This production is being performed at the Thoreau Elementary School. Tickets are $13 each and may be purchased either on line with a credit card at www.concordyouththeatre.org or to pay with cash or check, you may call our ticket line at 978.371.1482 to reserve them. There’s only 3 performances, so don’t miss out: Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 and Saturday Dec 8 and Sunday Dec. 9 at 2:30.

Concord Conservatory of Music
CCM’s Winter Semester registration is now open for group classes. For early childhood music  and movement, we’re offering Free Trial Week, Dec. 11 – 15. Early childhood classes are for ages 6months – 6 years.For group Voice we offer 2 classes: for 6-8 and 9-11 year olds.

Local Holiday Shopping Night
Shops on Main Street and Walden Street, Concord Center, will be open for holiday shopping on Thursday, December 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm with refreshments, holiday specials, and entertainment.  Strolling carolers.  Special drawings for prizes and Gift of Concord gift certificates.  Contact the Chamber of Commerce for further information at (978)369-3120.

Kids Movie Night at Fowler Library
The Concord Library’s Teen Advisory Board is hosting a Kids Movie Night at Fowler Library, 1322 Main Street, on Friday, December 14, 6:30-8:30pm for children in grades 2-5. The film being screened is “The Lorax”, and popcorn and drinks will be served.  This is a drop-off event.  The Library will be closed that evening to all patrons except the children attending the movie.  Advanced registration is required, and space is limited.  To register, please email Erin Duggan, Youth Services Coordinator, at eduggan@concordma.gov.

An Afternoon with Children’s Book Authors & Illustrators
As part of the Concord Museum’s 17th annual Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s Literature, join us on Saturday, December 15 to enjoy 38 trees decorated with inspiration from favorite picture books, then meet some of the esteemed authors and illustrators whose books are featured. Have your books signed by Honorary Chairs Jane Yolen and her daughter Heidi E. Y. Stemple, Jeannie Brett, Ilse Plume, Lynn Plourde, and Grace Lin.  Books are available for purchase in the Museum Shop. 1:00-4:00 p.m.; free with admission. On Saturday and Sunday, December 15 & 16, Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, a larger-than-life costume character, will also be visiting!  For further information visit: www.concordmuseum.org.

Holiday Give-Back to Benefit the Family of Gary Garafola
Thoreau School families are invited to continue to support the family of Concord bus driver Gary Garafola (“Mr. G.”) this holiday season by participating in an optional memorial fundraiser at Barefoot Books in Concord.  Families that shop at the Barefoot Books Studio between November 15 and December 15—and request their holiday purchases be applied to this fundraiser—will effectively be donating up to 40% of their purchases toward the Garafola family.  For more information, please contact concordevents@barefootbooks.com.  Or just come by the studio at 89 Thoreau Street between November 15 and December 15.

Concord Public Schools Integrated Preschool
Preschool slots are available for the 2013-2014 school year. You are invited to attend an Open House on Friday, January 2, 2013 (snow date: Friday, January 18), 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Children are welcome!

Come see our facility, talk with our staff, and ask questions about the program. We are located at the Ripley Building, 120 Meriam Road in Concord and we have half-day AM & PM sessions and a full-day program available.

Children who are 3 by September 1 and who are not yet 5 by August 31 are welcome to apply. Applications are available at the Open House, at each of the Concord Elementary School offices, the Special Education office in the Ripley Building, and on our web site, www.concordpublicschools.net.  Applications must be returned by January 25, 2013 to be eligible for the lottery.

Coats for Kids Drive
Concord Middle School’s Coats for Kids Club needs the elementary schools’ help in collecting coats for Anton’s Cleaners 18th  annual Coats for Kids  drive. Last year the students at CMS collected approximately 200 coats.  This year we are hoping to double that amount.  There is a collection box located in the front lobby at Thoreau School. We are accepting all winter coats – kids, adults and babies – that are in good wearable condition.    Please donate coats that you would give a friend to wear. Coats are being collected now through January 12, 2013. This holiday season as we visit with family and friends, let’s spread the word that we are collecting coats for those in need.  Your donations are greatly appreciated!
