March is a busy month for PTG activities and events at Thoreau. Be sure to keep up with the weekly Thoreau Announcements and reminders to learn about upcoming events. Thanks to Cathy Chadwick for organizing Math Night last Friday evening — what a fun night! We would like to thank Julie Miller and the Kindergarten parents for coordinating and donating food and drinks for the staff breakfast this past Friday morning. A correction from the February 16th Announcements: thanks to Trish Siefer and the first grade parents for coordinating and providing food for the February staff breakfast. Mark your calendars, the next Thoreau PTG meeting is Wednesday, March 14 at 9am in the Thoreau cafeteria. We hope to see you there. The next school committee meeting is Tuesday, March 13, 6:30 at the Ripley building. School Committee meeting agendas, minutes and the meeting schedule can be found on the Concord Public Schools and Concord-Carlisle Regional School District website http://www.concordpublicschools.net/index.php. The school committee has also posted an update following the joint meeting on February 28 and it includes information on both the proposed school budget and transportation services. YOUR INPUT SOUGHT ON PROPOSAL FOR ALL 6TH GRADERS TO ATTEND MIDDLE SCHOOL IN THE PEABODY BUILDING
CMS is soliciting input from members of the school community regarding a proposed restructuring of the middle school which would create a 6th grade building at the Peabody site and a 7th/8th building at the Sanborn site. It is important that all invested voices are heard, all concerns are raised, and all questions are answered. Our goal is to evaluate the potential impacts as completely as possible so that an informed decision can be made. We appreciate any feedback people would like to share. ANNUAL THOREAU SPELLING BEE

THOREAU SCHOOL HOBBY FAIR MONDAY
The annual Hobby Fair begins Monday. This is an event for 4th and 5th graders to share their hobbies, collectibles, art and other interests with teachers, family and friends. Each year we see an amazing array of fun and interesting exhibits, from displays of sports memorabilia to exhibits about music, dance, arts and crafts, and writing. The Fair will be open to the Thoreau School community on the evening of Monday, March 12, 6:30-7:30pm, when family and friends may view the many great exhibits. On Tuesday, March 13, the fair will run from 9:00-11:30am, during which time all classes will have time to visit and enjoy the Fair. THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL PROGRAMS
The Children’s Programming Committee will have hosted two exciting programs this week. Yesterday, Boston Ballet II, the second company of the world-class Boston Ballet dance company performed an interactive dance program for all grades which engaged the students in how to “build a ballet”. This special program introduced dance as an art form and showed students the relationship between ballet and classical music. On Friday, the Tufts University Beelzebubs will be performing and introducing students to the power of the human voice and “fun through song.” The Bubs are Tufts’ oldest all-male acapella group. They perform worldwide, have competed on NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” and provide the arrangements and background vocals for the acapella group on the TV series “Glee.”

THOREAU SPORTING GOODS RECYCLE SALE
If you are looking to donate your used sporting goods and/or outdoor toys to a good cause, consider this sale which will benefit the Thoreau PTG! Commonly donated/purchased items include: bikes, cleats of all kinds, tennis rackets, ski gear, ice skates, rollerblades, pads of all kinds, baseball/softball gear, and more. Drop-offs will take place on Friday, March 16, 3:30pm-6pm at the Thoreau cafeteria. Equipment should be clean and in good condition, please. The sale will run on Saturday, March 17, 9am-noon. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE ALL SCHOOL (ADULT) SOCIAL!
Come join your friends (and meet new ones) at the All School Social being held at the new restaurant Peyton’s River’s Edge in Maynard (next to Jam Time) on Friday, March 23, 7-9pm. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. Stay til 9:00 for more fun when DJ John Kelley starts spinning his tunes! Hope to see you all there!

CALLING ALL BAKERS!
The Cake Walk and Family Festival is 24 days away. As promised, here are this year’s categories: Best Animal Theme, Best Book Theme, Most Colorful, Best Food Theme, Best Nature Theme, Best Sports and Games Theme, Best Thoreau Spirit and Most Creative. Enjoy the fun involved in making these cakes for the Cake Decorating Contest. We also need cakes made for the Cake Walk itself – loads and loads of cakes. FROM THE LIBRARY: THE BOOK CHARACTER PARADE IS COMING!
Celebrate National Library Week with a Thoreau School tradition, our 24th annual Book Character Parade. On Tuesday, April 10, at 11:00am, children and staff dressed as their favorite book characters will march through the school halls led by the Cat in the Hat and a special guest. Children can start the fun now by choosing a book character and making a simple costume, mask or prop to suggest that character. For more information watch the Thursday Announcements or talk to Karen or Cathy in the library.
VACATION BOOK PROGRAM

CELEBRATING NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
We are celebrating National Nutrition Month! On Thursdays we will feature a new and nutritious food on the lunch menu. Parents, please encourage your children to buy lunch on that day and ask them what they tried and how they liked it. Here’s what our talented Food Service Director, Alden Cadwell is cooking up …

Next Week is Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary!
To celebrate this important milestone and to kick off Girl Scout Week (March 11-17), we invite all Girl Scouts, past and present, to join in the festivities:
- Sunday, March 11: Tea and SWAPS to Celebrate 100 Years! At the Scout House, 2:30-4:30pm, RSVP email@example.com or through your troop leader. Sing-a-long, skits, stories, SWAPS, cake, and commemorative fun patches for all!
- Monday, March 12: Wear Your Uniform to School Day. Wear your tunics, vests, and sashes with pride to show all you’ve accomplished as a Girl Scout.
The Sound of Music
At Concord Middle School, the halls are alive with “The Sound of Music” – a musical extravaganza appropriate for all ages. Shows are at the CMS-Sanborn auditorium on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31 at 7:00pm, with a matinee on Sunday, April 1 at 2:30pm. Challenge Your Skills at Community Chest’s Spring Gala!
The Concord-Carlisle Community Chest is excited to announce this year’s Spring Fundraising Gala, It Only Takes A Minute. The Gala will be held on Saturday March 31st and will offer an exciting evening of party games (loosely based on the hit TV show “Minute to Win It”!), with raffle prizes for the winners. Babysitting for Community Chest Spring Gala
Friends of Concord Carlisle Girls Lacrosse (FoCCGL) will be teaming up with the Community Chest to offer babysitting from 6:30-10:30pm on the night of the Spring Gala, March 31 (the event is from 7-10pm). For families with 1 or 2 children, one CCHS Lacrosse player will babysit for $40 for the 4 hours. For families with 3 or more children, two CCHS Lacrosse players will babysit for $60 for the 4 hours. FoCCGL will drive the girls to and from the assigned homes and FoCCGL board members will be “on call” in case any babysitter runs into an unexpected issue. Sign-ups will include a signed waiver. Concord Chamber Music Society Presents the Harlem Quartet
On Sunday, April 1 at 2:00 pm at the Emerson Umbrella for the Arts in Concord, the Concord Chamber Music Society will present a jazz-inspired concert for all generations, featuring the Harlem Quartet. Praised for its “panache” by the New York Times, the Harlem Quartet is “bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing, and intelligent,” says the Cincinnati Inquirer. Join fellow Concord Public School students for “From Beethoven to the Blues – a trip through time on the A Train!” Tickets (free for children under 12, $5 for students, $15 for adults) may be purchased online at www.concordchambermusic.org or by phone: 978-371-9667.
Pop Warner Football Registration is Open
Registration for the 2012 Concord Carlisle Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading program is open on a first come, first serve basis. The program is encouraging everyone who intends to play this upcoming season to register as soon as possible. We expect to field teams at 5 levels for players and cheerleaders from second grade through eighth grade. If you would like to learn more, we are holding a Registration and Meet the Coaches meeting on March 22 at 7:30 pm at the CCHS Cafeteria. Coach Robichaud, CCHS varsity football coach, plans to attend and speak with attendees.
