As you likely know by now, voters in both Concord and Carlisle approved the ballot question authorizing the construction and funding of the new Concord-Carlisle High School, with an 84% approval in both towns. The new school will be ready just in time for this year’s fifth graders to begin their high school careers! We are enormously thankful to all of the parents, teachers and staff who worked on this critical project which will benefit all of our children.

Speaking of giving thanks, we can’t believe that the beloved Thoreau Turkey Trot and Thanksgiving break are next week. If you haven’t sent in a Turkey Trot permission slip for your child, please go to www.thoreauptg.org to print out a form. We need a signed permission slip for every child or your child will not be able to participate in the race.

Thanks also to Jen Jiganti and the 3rd grade parents for organizing and donating food for the November staff breakfast.  And speaking of donating food, the food drive for Open Table is running through Wednesday, November 23. Please consider sending your child in with a non-perishable food donation. The donation box is located outside of the Library. We would also like to thank everyone who attended the November PTG meeting. The next PTG meeting will be January 11 at 7:00pm. We hope everyone has a great weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving!

At this time of Thanksgiving, it is again time for Thoreau School’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. All collected food is donated to Concord’s local food pantry, Open Table. Open Table feeds over 200 guests each week and gives each family a bag of groceries to bring home. Open Table is able to do this because of the generosity of our community. Any non-perishable foods are appreciated, but these are the most wanted items: spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, coffee/tea/hot chocolate mix, cereal, tuna fish/canned stews/soups, jelly, children’s snacks for school (juice boxes, pretzels, fruit cups, etc.), condiments (ketchup, mustard, cooking oil) and all other non-perishable food items.Please: NO CANDY! Our food drive will run through November 23.There will be a box in front of the library for your children to deposit their items. Thank you very much for your generosity and contributions!

Annual Appeal Update: We are at 22% of our goal so far. Collect BOXTOPS and drop them in the box inside the front door of the school. Please include your teacher’s name so your class will get credit! The winning class in each grade will earn a popsicle party — so CLIP, COLLECT, and DEPOSIT those BOXTOPS! Each and every one counts as cash for Thoreau School. Questions? The following Sick Day Guidelines can also be found on page 41 of the Parent and Student Elementary School Handbook and on the Health Office web site. Please encourage your child to get plenty of rest and fluids to help with their recovery. While considering your child’s attendance at school, note if your child is ready to return to his or her full schedule and make adjustments for their benefit.

Sick Day Guidelines: The following guidelines are used to determine dismissals and may be helpful for parents to determine appropriate attendance. Keep your child home from school if he or she:

  • has been vomiting during the night
  • has a cold with sneezing or coughing and a persistent runny nose
  • has a disruptive cough
  • has diarrhea
  • has an oral temperature of 100 degrees or higher
  • has a severe sore throat
  • does not eat breakfast because of a stomach ache
  • has pink bloodshot eyes with yellow or green drainage
  • has a contagious condition, or suspected infection such as strep throat; student must be taking the antibiotic medication for 24 hours before returning to school
  • has untreated active head lice infestation; a child must be checked by the school nurse before returning to the classroom following lice treatment
  • has significant abdominal or chest pain
  • has a head or eye injury

This is a guideline and is not all-inclusive. The nurse reserves the right to dismiss students who, in her professional opinion, are contagious or are too ill to be in school.

Please report all illnesses to the school office before the start of the school day via the absentee line. Please encourage your child to get plenty of rest and fluids in their recovery. Be sure to check the Lost & Found in the cafeteria for your missing items. Anything left will be donated during the Thanksgiving break.


(The Before/After School Prgram is looking for a coordinator to receive enrollments, keep a spreadsheet of students, and coordinate classes. Please contact Jen Keegan Jiganti at meljiganti@aol.com if you are interested.)

  • Plaster Masks: Masks have been used by many cultures for disguise, ceremony or entertainment. Students will explore the history of masks then they will work in pairs to create plaster molds of their own face. These forms will then be used as the base for a mask. Kate Hiltz will teach kids to alter the base forms and add embellishments on their way to creating their own unique mask. When: Thursdays  Where: Art Room  Who: Ages 8-11  Cost: $55 (materials included).  Limited to 10 students.
  • Thoreau Newspaper: Get the scoop with the Thoreau school newspaper!  Conduct interviews, write articles, and take photos for the school paper. Students will layout materials and publish the newspaper for sale to the Thoreau community. Nancy Dillon, Beth Kalikstein, Kathy Caro and Kelly Clough will spearhead the crew.  When: Thursdays  3:30-5:00  Where: Lunch Room  Who: Gr. 3-5  Cost: $50, materials fee TBD. Limited to 35 students.
  • Environmental Field Studies: Come explore invasive species on the Thoreau School grounds! Conduct experiments on the Norway Maples, design a PR campaign, and meet with our CC High School Environmental Field Studies Buddies. Finally, tap the trees for an edible invasive treat. Susan Erickson will lead the way.  When: Thursdays Where: Mrs. Erickson’s Classroom Who:  Gr. 4-5  Cost: $55 (materials fee included). Limited to 12 students.
  • Fencing: Sabre:  This group will focus on basic sabre technique and rules.  Good for students new to fencing and those continuing after an introductory class. Taught by one of the coaches of CCHS fencing team.  When: Fridays  3:15 – 4:15  Where: Cafeteria  Who: 8-11 year olds  Cost: $150. Limited to 12 students.
  • Advanced Sabre:  This class will use real sabres for more refined technique and footwork.  This fencing class will use electronic scoring.  Good for the dedicated fencer: for students with prior fencing experience. When: Mondays  3:15-4:15 Where: Stage Who  9-11 year olds  Cost: $150. Limited to 8 students.
  • Fuzzy Felt and Fabric Creatures: Join Nancy Dillon for a sewing extravaganza. Students will sew stuffed animals, small pillows, and drawstring bags. Kids can use patterns or learn how to create their own design. Students may make holiday gifts. When: Wednesdays  Where:  Mrs. Dillon’s classroom  Who: Gr. 2-5  Cost $70 (materials fee included). Limited to 10 students.
  • Kids can Cook!: Make delicious and nutritious food with Kids Eat Smart founder Hilary Boynton and chef Ben .Elliott from Salt Box Farm. This class will focus on ways to use whole foods in creating dishes kids can eat and love.  When: Mondays  Where: Cafeteria Who: K -Grade 2  Cost: $75 (materials fee included). Limited to 12 kids.
  • Indoor Soccer, Hockey & Gymnastics: There’s something for everyone in this winter sports class taught by Mrs. Murphy, Ms. Taft and Ms. Hobbie-Welch. December will alternate between soccer and hockey. In January and February, the class will do gymnastics activities.  When: Wednesdays Gr. 2-3; Thursdays Gr. 4-5  Where: Gym  Cost:  $50. Limited to 16 students.
  • Morning Sports: Games and gymnastics for K-1.  When: Tuesdays AND Fridays 8:15-8:45.  Where: Gym  Who: K-Grade 1 Cost $50.  Limited to 12 students.

Enrollment is complete when your enrollment form (which was sent home in backpacks) and check made out to Thoreau PTG is received. These can be brought in with your student to be dropped in the After School Program Box in the faculty mailroom  or mailed to Jen Keegan Jiganti, 60 Highland Street, Concord, MA.

Thanksgiving Turkey Truck

Please join Holy Family Parish on Sunday, November 20, for the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Truck, a drive to collect frozen turkeys for the Crossroads Shelter in East Boston and the Roxbury Family Life Center. Members of the Holy Family Youth Ministry will be collecting frozen turkeys (average size of 10 lbs) from 7:00am until 1:00 pm at the truck parked in front of the church in Monument Square. It’s a Hoe Down!

The Concord-Carlisle Second-Grade Brownie Troops are sponsoring a Girl Scout Hoe Down this Sunday, November 20, 3pm-5pm, at the Scout House at 74 Walden St. Girl Scouts and their families are encouraged to attend. Join us for square dancing with a live caller and music, crafts, and refreshments. Cost is $4 per child; adults free. This is NOT a drop-off event; 1:6 adult-child ratio applies. Family Concert

The Concord Orchestra, conducted by Richard Pittman, will present its annual family concert on Sunday, December 4. Joyce Kulhawik will narrate Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland, a contemporary setting of the story by Michael Gandolfi. The Westford Academy String Orchestra, directed by Kenneth Culver, has been invited to perform with the orchestra in the St. Paul Suite by Gustav Holst.  The program will conclude with seasonal music by Leroy Anderson. Performances are at 2:00 and 4:00 at the Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden Street, Concord.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children.  For tickets and information, visit www.concordorchestra.com.
