MATH NIGHT THANKS!

Our trip to Antarctica last Friday night for Math Night was a blast! The games this year were spectacular (I know I needed help from a few 2nd graders to figure out how to do some of those puzzles!), and the turnout was wonderful. The love of math is alive and well at Thoreau School. Many thanks to Math Night Chair, Cathy Chadwick and her team including Suzanne Kelliher and Mac Ubaldino for their hard work in putting this together. Thanks also to the many other volunteers who made this night run without a hitch.

I would like to give my sincere thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who made Math Night such a success, especially to Suzanne Kelliher who organized the volunteer scheduling and to Marc Ulbadino who managed our delicious concessions. Also, many thanks to Mrs. Pettyjohn who collected a mobile library of math and Antarctic-themed books which she read to a rapt audience throughout the evening. And to Bill, Mario and Carol who stayed late to help with set up and clean up and kept things in order during the night. We could not have done it without you!

THANK YOU FROM THE COATS FOR KIDS CLUB

The Coats for Kids club at CMS would like to thank you for helping us this year in our Coats for Kids drive. You helped Concord Middle School collect 360 winter coats for those in need. Because of your generosity, we have placed 3rd in the middle school category for Anton’s Cleaners’ annual collection. We will be able to purchase new books for our library that Thoreau students will be able to enjoy when they attend CMS! FROM THE LIBRARY: THE BOOK CHARACTER PARADE IS COMING!

Celebrate National Library Week with a Thoreau School tradition, our annual Book Character Parade.  This will be our 25th! On Tuesday, April 9, at 11:30am, children and staff dressed as their favorite book characters will march through the school halls led by the Cat in the Hat and a special guest. Children can start the fun now by choosing a book character and making a simple costume, mask or prop to suggest that character. For more information watch the Thursday Announcements or talk to Karen or Cathy in the library.

  • Recognition to Kathie Henry, from Thoreau, who is retiring
  • Transportation department has been relocated to its temporary home for the duration of construction and the transition seems to have gone well
  • Thoreau Evaluation Report presented to school committee:
    • Meg Anderson, the hired private consultant, highlighted the strengths and then issues and challenges around collaboration, decision-making and communication within Thoreau School (See full meeting minutes)
    • Some of the School Committee comments:
      • Benincasa asked the consultant’s assessment of the gravity of the situation. Answer: on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, it is about an 8-9.
      • Munn asked how School Committee could be most helpful and asked what the goal should be from this. Answer: To move forward
      • Benincasa applauded the creativity and courage of teachers. Voiced support of a teacher/admin retreat
    • Some comments from Community
      • Good communications is still a missing piece
      • TELL survey points to problems at schools across district, not just Thoreau
      • Why wasn’t Meg Anderson charged with learning why things at Thoreau are the way they are? Why don’t teachers feel safe or supported?
      • Whose responsibility is it to ensure that things improve? Answer: Superintendent Rigby stated it was her’s
      • Several people felt their complaints have not been attended to properly. Response from Superintendent: Those with complaints should file them in writing with Superintendent

  • The construction has started and site fences have been installed and in two years we will have a new high school
  • John Boynton and group presented their initial plans for renovating and updating the recreational and outdoor spaces at CCHS and are seeking authorization from the committee to continue in their development of a more specific plan.
    • The plan includes 6 tennis courts, a basketball court, two baseball and softball fields, improvements to the lighting at the football field, connecting to a planned amphitheater, renovation of lower grass fields and pedestrian access
    • Presentation was commended. SC will review the information and defer a vote until the next regularly scheduled meeting.
  • Presentation by Maureen Spada on Bus Depot location and related issues. The purpose of this presentation was to expand on the reason the school committee has voted to restrict CCHS as a site for consideration for the bus depot
  • CCHS Building project update: Site work is underway. Site prep took place last week and will continue for the next two weeks. Following that, heavy earthwork will begin and will take about one month.

THE CAKE WALK IS COMING!

Saturday, April 6, 2-4pm is the Thoreau Cake Walk and Family Festival! Don’t forget to start planning your cakes for the Cake Decorating Contest! You can also make prize cakes for the Cake Walk winners! We need LOTS and LOTS of cakes – 300-400! The more cakes we get, the more winners we will have at the Cake Walk.

Cake Decorating Contest Info: Cakes to be entered into the Cake Decorating Contest should be dropped off on Saturday, April 6, 12:30-1:30pm at the Faculty Dining Room (near the gym). Judging will begin promptly at 1:30pm. All cakes entered in the contest must be decorated by a Thoreau student. Please do not use cake plates or decorations that you want returned to you. You may enter as many cakes in the contest as you like. All cakes must be wrapped in plastic wrap and labeled with the cake flavor, student’s name, grade, teacher and category. The contest categories are: Cleverest Cupcakes, Best Animal Theme, Best Book Theme, Most Colorful, Best Food Theme, Best Nature Theme, Best Sports & Games Theme, Best Thoreau Spirit, and Most Creative. Cakes that win the contest will be displayed during the Festival and may be taken home by their respective student decorators. Cakes that do not win the contest will be handed out as prize cakes during the Cake Walk.

Prize Cake Donation Info: You may bring prize cakes for the Cake Walk (cakes not to be judged in the Contest) any time before or during the Festival. All prize cakes must be wrapped in plastic wrap and labeled with the flavor of the cake. If you bring an allergy-free prize cake, please let us know when you drop it off. Prize cakes do not need to be big – you can make 2 prize cakes out of 1 box of mix! Look for more info about the Thoreau Cake Walk & Family Festival in upcoming Announcements.

Concord Family Network’s Spring Egg Hunt
The Concord Family Network’s annual Spring Egg Hunt is one of our most popular events of the year. On Saturday, March 22, 3:30-5:30pm, bring your basket to the Old Manse at 269 Monument Street and experience the rich history of the Old Manse grounds as your children search for eggs in an orchard that stands where Ralph Waldo Emerson once played as a child. We will have two separate egg hunts, one for the toddlers and one for older children. At the end of the hunt, each child will exchange the eggs they’ve found for a bag of spring-themed toys and nut-free treats. During the event we will provide refreshments, games and crafts, and a charity raffle for exciting prizes. Space limited to 150 children, with priority given to CFN members. Members please RSVP via Big Tent, non-members can RSVP starting March 7 at concordfamilyntwk@yahoo.com.

Help Bring Comfort to a Hurting Child
The Youth Group at Holy Family Parish is holding a drive from March 9 through April 7 to collect gently used stuffed animals to be donated to Project Smile. Project Smile (www.projectsmile.org) is an organization that distributes stuffed animals to police and fire departments to be used to give comfort to children experiencing various types of trauma. Donated animals must be in excellent condition, free of stains, tears and smells. They must be no larger than 21 inches and cannot contain batteries, religious themes or be commemorative animals with years sewn on them. Drop off boxes will be located at both entrances to the Church as well as at the Parish offices at 55 Church St in West Concord.

i2Camp: STEM Summer Camp
i2 Camp is a new hands-on summer day camp designed to broaden middle school children’s exposure to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). i2 Camp developed its program by partnering with some of the world’s leading scientific and academic institutions, including MIT, the Museum of Science, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Teachers College at Columbia University.  Each of these partners created a series of one-week courses for the camp that cover different STEM topics, including the Science of Smart Cities, Genetics and DNA, Challenges of Engineering, and Electronics and Robotics. i2 Camp will run a series of one week courses at the Roxbury Latin School in Boston from June 17 – July 19.  The camp will be open to students entering 5th through 8th grades.  For more information about the program, please visit i2Camp.org or call 617-833-2762 or e-mail atcontact@i2camp.org.

Register now at WWW.CCYB.ORG. It’s going to be a great spring – don’t wait any longer! Season runs from April to June. Get ready for the season with Spring Training clinics run by the CC High School girls team! The CCHS team will run 4 spring training clinics on Sunday March 17, March 24, April 7, and April 21. These clinics will cover all skills through fast paced station-to-station fun. The pairing of the HS girls with our youth league players creates a special mentoring opportunity that carries into many years of loving the game. Don’t miss it! The clinics will be held indoors and (weather permitting) outdoors at CCHS in the afternoons. The registration fee is $50 for all four sessions. Planet Fastpitch Pitching Clinic Comes to Concord Carlisle High School
Two four week pitching classes designed to work on the various mechanical aspects of pitching. This clinic is for girls ages 8–18. The clinic will cover the basics of proper mechanics for maximum speed and accuracy. For example, the student will learn the correct footwork, posture, and arm circle, and will be shown the different grips for specific pitches. Depending on the level of the student and if time allows, further information will be given, including suggestions for a practice routine, game preparation, and the mental makeup required to be successful. Each participant should bring her own catcher. You will be grouped by age and ability into one of two time slots. You will receive an email on your group time the week before the clinic is to begin.
