WELCOME BACK!

We hope everyone had a wonderful relaxing week, and that you have come back ready to participate in the many upcoming PTG events. It will be a busy March. Mark your calendars for:

9TH ANNUAL THOREAU FAMILY MATH NIGHT!
Friday, March 1, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Join us for an adventure to snowy Antarctica to explore the depths of the oceans and travel across icy glaciers, playing math games and solving riddles along the way! We’ll have a raffle, estimation challenges and prizes, as well as pizza, snacks and drinks for sale. CALLING ALL SPELLERS!

The deadline for registration for the Spelling Bee is this Friday, March 1. The more the better, so please sign up. The Bee is scheduled for Saturday, March 9. 3rd and 4th graders participate in teams–usually 2 or 3 per team; 5th graders compete individually. (The 3rd grade round is non-elimination, very low stress, but quite fun.) We need a good group to make the event a success. The Bee will take place on the afternoon of March 9, with 3rd grade first, at 3pm, followed by 4th grade at 4:30 and 5th grade at 5:30. Registration forms are on the PTG site, or please contact me at hrothermel@me.com. Q: HOW MANY WATER FALLS DID LEWIS & CLARK ENCOUNTER IN THE GREAT FALLS AREA?

The end of Lewis & Clark’s expedition is nearing – and so is the deadline for this year’s Geography Quest! Completed Quests can be returned to the Thoreau library any time before March 4. Additional copies can be downloaded from the PTG website. (The answer to last week’s trivia is: Mosquitoes were an incessant problem for the Corps of Discovery.) Check next week’s Thoreau Announcements for the answer to this week’s GeoQuest Trivia.

SEEKING THOREAU ANNOUNCEMENTS EDITOR

Are you interested in helping out with Thursday’s Thoreau Announcements? We are looking for someone to join the team! This is a good way to help out the PTG right from home. If you are interested, please notify Shelagh (shelaghmoskow@aol.com), Jen (larison@verizon.net), or Jackie (jackiemeehan@comcast.net) as soon as possible. Thanks! Job description includes the following:

  • Overview: Thoreau Announcements is a weekly publication produced by the PTG. It provides communication about important dates, activities, fundraisers, and general information of interest to the Thoreau community. Submissions to the Thoreau Announcements are made via email. The deadline for submissions is Monday, 9pm prior to the Thursday publication date. The TA is not published during school vacation weeks.
  • Responsibilities: There are two Editors of Thoreau Announcements. The Editors compile the submissions weekly, edit them, and post the final copy on the Thoreau PTG website. (Posting triggers emailing to subscribers.) The TA can be put together anytime after Monday at 9 pm, but enough time must be built in to accommodate any changes that may be necessary before it is posted/delivered mid-day Thursday.
  • Time Commitment: Typically an Editor works for one month and then switches off to the other Editor, passing on any special instructions, notes, etc. The time commitment when “on” is 2-3 hours per week.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, MARCH 18 – MAY 17

  • Fuzzy Felt: Join Mrs. Dillon in her sewing extravaganza! Learn to sew bags, pillows, stuffed animals and learn appliqué. Fun for boys and girls who like crafts. Wednesdays 3:15 – 4:30; Mrs. Dillon’s Room; $80; Grades 3-5
  • Karate for Kids K-1: This program offers your child the opportunity to learn martial arts in a fun, safe, and friendly environment. Stories, games, obstacle courses and a variety of teaching methods are used. The children improve muscle tone, flexibility, and coordination while also learning important life skills. In every class the children have a great time and learn something new! 50% Fitness, 35% Life Principles, 15% Martial Arts Principles. Program includes a t-shirt, karate belt, and karate coloring book. Runs March 25 – May 20; Mondays 3:15 – 4:15 in the gym; $150; K-1st grade
  • Caligraphy and Creative Lettering: In this class, you will learn different types of lettering including calligraphy, 3-D letters, and other fun types of alphabets. Projects will include making cards, creating name signs, and writing song lyrics/quotes in fancy letters. Led by Ms. Kalikstein. Mondays 8 am; Mrs. Dillon’s Room; $75; Grades 3-5
  • Master Chess: Chess is an activity that can be approached as a sport, science or art form. In this class students will learn the basic and advanced aspects of chess in a style that is instructive creative and fun. Taught by James DellaSelva, two time RI State Chess Champion. Jim has an expert ranking in the United States Chess Federation. Fridays 3:15 – 4:30, March 22- May 10in the library; $98; Grades 1-5
  • Yoga: Children will learn yoga in an engaging and interactive way that will increase their strength and flexibility. They will learn yoga poses, breathing techniques, and meditation through visualization activities that they can use in their everyday lives! Classes involve individual, partner and group activities that will help build concentration, develop body awareness. Price includes mat. 3:15 – 4:15 Wednesdays in the gym; $95; Grade 1-3
  • Robotics Boot Camp: Join Ms Erickson and Ms Howard in 4th grade-only robotics boot camp. Learn to program the NXT Lego mind storms. At the end of the session, we’ll have a mock FirstLego League competition. Tuesday mornings, 7:45 to 8:45; Mrs. Erickson’s classroom; $80; Grade 4

AFTER SCHOOL TENNIS

The Callen Tennis after-school program will be held at Thoreau every Thursday, April 25-June 13. Additionally, Saturday Match Play will run Saturday, April 27-June 8 (no class May 25). K/1st grade: 3:30-4:15pm; 2nd/3rd grades: 4:15-5:15pm. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Thursday after school class costs $165.00. Saturday match play costs $135.00. Registration began at 7am Wednesday February 27 and runs through March 13. We urge you to register early (Willard’s classes filled up within the first hour of registration). To register send an email to callentennis@yahoo.com after 7am on Feb. 27 with the subject line “Callen Tennis Registration”. Please include your child’s name, grade, teacher, and home phone number in the body of the message.

Upon receipt of your email, you will be notified via email if your child has a spot or not. If your child does have a spot, a waiver, registration form and payment instructions will be emailed to the first 24 applicants; remaining applicants will be placed on a waiting list if necessary. In order to guarantee your child’s spot, all forms and payment must be received within 48hrs, no exceptions. THOREAU CAKE WALK AND FAMILY FESTIVAL 

Save the Date! Saturday, April 6, 2-4pm is the Thoreau Cake Walk and Family Festival! Come and join us for an afternoon of carnival games, food, crafts, music and loads of fun. Try your hand at one of the many games we will have — there are loads of prizes to be won! Also, if you have never taken part in a cake walk, this is a much loved Thoreau tradition that shouldn’t be missed. It’s really like a game of musical chairs. Each participant takes their place in a circle and stands on a numbered pad. When the music starts, the participants parade around in a circle; when the music stops, our master of ceremonies will pull lucky numbers out of a hat. If your number is called, you win of one of the fabulous cakes! Regarding the cakes, we need lots and lots – 300 to 400 to use as prizes! Thoreau students can also enter their cakes into the Cake Decorating Contest! Town of Concord Open Space and Recreation Plan
DEADLINE TODAY!
The Town is in the process of updating its Open Space and Recreation Plan. This plan will assist in the maintenance and enhancement of the both active and passive recreational facilities to benefit the character of the community and protect its green infrastructure. Please take 20 minutes to complete the Open Space and Recreation Plan Survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QCDMQKG . Your responses will help focus Town decisions regarding open space and recreational needs for Concord over the next seven years. Your input is imperative to assist the Town in developing a plan that realizes your needs. Surveys will be accepted through February 28, 2013. Old Broadway
Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts is excited to welcome back some of its favorite performers for a concert revue of musical theatre classics in OLD BROADWAY on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 pm.  Old Broadway is perfect for families, younger audiences and folks who may remember the songs from the original productions. EU will be breathing some new life into these classics; singing familiar tunes with fun twists and, of course, will feature a preview of our Spring musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Tickets are $15 and are on sale at www.ticketstage/EUCA or visit www.emersonumbrella.org.

Candidates Agree to March 3 Forum
The League of Women of Voters of Concord-Carlisle (LWVCC) will host a Concord Candidates’ Forum on Sunday, March 3, 2013, 2:00 – 3:30pm in the Willard School Auditorium. (Snow date is Tuesday, March 5, 7:30pm.) The League invited all candidates running for office in the March 19 Town Election to participate in the forum, and all School Committee and Board of Selectmen candidates have accepted. Candidates for the two contested School Committee seats (Lisa Bergen, Johanna Boynton, Cynthia Rainey and Kathi Snook) will comprise the first panel, and the unopposed candidates for Selectman (Alice Kaufman and Carmin Reiss) will sit on the second panel. Candidates will answer questions from the League of Women Voters and audience members. Voters may also submit questions on or before March 1 at questions@lwvcc.org. Nancy Carapezza of the Wayland LWV will moderate the forum. This program is free and open to the public. The LWVCC urges all Concord residents to attend.

The League plans to record the forum for later broadcast on CCTV local cable Channel 8 and for viewing as Video on Demand at www.concordtv.org. Help Bring Comfort to a Hurting Child
The Youth Group at Holy Family Parish is holding a drive from March 9 through April 7 to collect gently used stuffed animals to be donated to Project Smile. Project Smile (www.projectsmile.org) is an organization that distributes stuffed animals to police and fire departments to be used to give comfort to children experiencing various types of trauma. Donated animals must be in excellent condition, free of stains, tears and smells. They must be no larger than 21 inches and cannot contain batteries, religious themes or be commemorative animals with years sewn on them. Drop off boxes will be located at both entrances to the Church as well as at the Parish offices at 55 Church St in West Concord.

Meet the Animals
Join The Nature Connection on March 10 at 2pm and 3pm for a rare opportunity to meet our therapeutic hedgehog, chinchillas, dove, and other fascinating program animals in an intimate setting. Learn how these animals provide teaching and healing to the individuals we serve. Hear inspiring stories about how these creatures connect people with the natural world — and transform lives! Concord Carlisle Spring Softball Registration is OPEN!
Register now at WWW.CCYB.ORG. It’s going to be a great spring – don’t wait any longer! Season runs from April to June. Get ready for the season with Spring Training clinics run by the CC High School girls team! The CCHS team will run 4 spring training clinics on Sunday March 17, March 24, April 7, and April 21. These clinics will cover all skills through fast paced station-to-station fun. The pairing of the HS girls with our youth league players creates a special mentoring opportunity that carries into many years of loving the game. Don’t miss it! The clinics will be held indoors and (weather permitting) outdoors at CCHS in the afternoons. The registration fee is $50 for all four sessions. “How to Talk So Kids will Listen and Listen So Kids will Talk”
This Center for Parents and Teachers’ perennial favorite is a five-part, video-based series that offers innovative ways to solve such common problems as how to listen to and understand your child’s concerns; how to have cooperation in your family without nagging; how to find alternatives to punishment; and how to help your child attain a positive self-image. Video clips are used as a jumping off point for discussion and to illustrate points. Parents come away with practical strategies to assist them in communicating with their child and motivating their child to cooperate. The series offers a powerful foundation to enhance communication, a great advantage to have set in place in advance of the adolescent years ahead. Insightful tips are shared along with empowering ways to approach common parenting dilemmas. Presentation and discussion is overseen by a seasoned facilitator, Cyndie White, M.S., Parent Educator, formerly of Harvard University. This workshop fills up fast (limited to 15), so please register early! Dates: Mondays, April 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20; 12:45-2:15pm at the Ripley Building, 120 Meriam Road, Concord. Declaring Dignity: A Community Talk
Let’s face it: we’re not always the best people we could be, out there in the world. That’s why we need to listen to Dr. Donna Hicks, an international conflict resolution specialist and author of the book Dignity: Its Essential Role in Resolving Conflict. The goal of her Declaration of Dignity project is designed to help us begin shaping a world in which we are all considered invaluable, priceless, and irreplaceable. To share this important message with the community, and to celebrate their 25 years of quality educational programs, The Center for Parents and Teachers is bringing her to Concord on Tuesday, April 2, for all to hear. Her enlightening talk will happen in the CCHS auditorium at 7 pm, with a book signing reception after in the cafeteria. Cost to attend is $12 in advance, $15 at the door; registration will be on our website at www.centerforparentsandteachers.org. Ticket proceeds go to fund the many parent and teacher education programs provided by CPT, including “Cyber Safety” and “Mindfulness for Parents”, as well as teacher professional development workshops.
