PTG Co-Presidents’ Message and News

Whether you continued with homeschool activities or took a break last week we hope you were able to have some family time and enjoy the outdoors. We are lucky to live in an area with so many beautiful trails and outdoor space to take advantage of during this time. While other states canceled school for the year weeks ago and we knew it was coming, it was still difficult to hear the final decision. As we continue to do the best we can with our children at home we look forward to the day when they are back at Thoreau. We continue to see many acts of kindness and support in our community which will help us get through these next few months. We also want to thank our teachers and administration for their continued support and leadership.

There will be a Principal Coffee/PTG Meeting Tuesday, May 12th at 1:00 pm via Zoom. More details to follow.

Teacher Appreciation Week- May 6th to 10th

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Let the amazing Thoreau staff know how much you appreciate them…..even in isolation! Parents are encouraged to email notes of gratitude throughout the week of 5/6 to 5/10, and be sure to remember those ‘Specials’ teachers also. Hint: visit the Thoreau website’s ‘Academics’ tab for a list of teachers and email addresses to spam them with LOVE! Students can send teacher-specific drawings and notes directly to teachers as well.

The Staff Appreciation Committee will also put together a slideshow of notes/drawings or video clips to share with the entire staff toward the end of the week. Students who want to be included in this slideshow can send submissions to no later than 8 p.m. Monday 5/6. These submissions should convey appreciation for entire Thoreau staff and NOT address teachers by name.

If anyone has questions, the committee can be reached at or

At Home Field Day- May 8th

The Elementary PE Staff (Mr. Gaudreau, Mr. Germond and Mrs. Murphy) are hoping you can notify families that the elementary schools will be having an at home field day this year!

The elementary PE teachers are excited to offer a National Field Day on Friday May 8th, organized and sponsored by the On-line Physical Education Network (OPEN). PE teachers will be posting info on their website and disseminating that info through classroom teachers so that students can see what activities are offered and practice activities on the days leading up to the big event.

Here is a link to the activities:

You can also see my webpage for more info: Students can try some or all the activities, but by Friday May 8th they must choose 4 activities they wish to participate in, but can do as many as your family wishes. Activities can be done at any point throughout the day. The activities are designed to be played with common household goods. Parents may want to check out materials needed for activities here:

Remember students do not have to practice all the activities, but they certainly can if they want to! If you don’t have the exact materials you can improvise or just skip that activity. No other work will be given from classroom teachers on that day! We hope this will be a fun day for your child!

Thanks, stay safe and be well
