Fall BOKS starts Tuesday, September 24th – Registration opens September 4th

We are pleased to announce the fall session of BOKS, a before school physical activity program, at the Thoreau School. BOKS is a nationally-recognized, before-school fitness program that stands for Build Our Kids Success. Studies show that engaging in physical activity before school boosts kids’ ability to learn and retain information. After the first session at Thoreau, Thoreau teachers reported a positive difference in kids enrolled in the program! BOKS prepares children for a day of learning and is an important step in helping children gain an appreciation of the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. BOKS was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book “Spark”. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled with team-oriented games and provide plenty of opportunity for play, since the program focuses on fun!  For more information on the program, please visit

Boks is always FREE of charge, and is open to any Thoreau Kindergartner through 5th grader!  The Fall BOKS season will run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00-8:50 AM, starting on September 24th through November 14th. Because of the immense interest in this program, the first 25 students will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.  Registration will open on Wednesday, September 4th at 8AM and will close we when we reach our max- register early, and you must re-register even if your child participated in a past BOKS session.

Stay tuned for a registration link!

Typical BOKS Class

  • Fun warm-up game or movement drills
  • Running activity, relay races, obstacle courses and strength movements
  • Fun games
  • Cool down and a BOKS Bit- a nutrition component of the program

BOKS is designed to involve the whole community. The more volunteers, the more kids we can enroll in the program.  Volunteers’ children are automatically enrolled in the program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Melissa at or Jordan

2019-2020 Lego Club co-op

Thoreau School is pleased to continue its traditional Lego Club co-op this year!

This informal club meets according to age, and is separated into three groups (kindergarten, first grade and second through fifth grades).  All groups meet seven times during the school year on Mondays in the cafeteria from 3:30-4:15.  (See dates below). The cost to join Lego Club is a one-time $10 fee per child.

Lego Club is a low-key, non-competitive group where students can choose to free build on their own or together with their friends.  Their unique creations get displayed in the hallway case each month for all to see!  Leaders also offer a fun challenge before ending each meeting.  Prizes are always awarded to everyone!

Please note that each group will be capped at 20 students so enroll via the links ASAP to reserve your child’s place.  Lego Club is not a PTG sponsored activity.  It is an independent co-op, and depends on parent volunteers each month.  All parents are expected to volunteer during at least one meeting though they’re welcome to sign up for more!

Details on volunteering and paying of dues will be shared upon receipt of enrollment forms.  Please contact Jordan Binder with questions
